Rhythmic displacement involves changing note duration values, which creates afeel as though you are playing against time. This effect is interesting as the accents of the notes may not necessary fall on downbeats, which makes the song less 'straight' to the beat.

 

Technique 1 - Pushing 'forward' or'backward' displacement

There are many other possibilities to rhythmic displacement. The above examples are just some of them. Although rhythmic displacement is commonly practice in Jazz music, you can also use such techniques in modern contemporary music too. However, such techniques should be used at the player's discretion.
