FREE ONILNE LESSONS (Finger Exercises) Scales C major scale played over 2 octaves Practising scales improves finger coordination, agility and the ability to pull off fills and runs. Focus your practice on the right hand as runs and fills involving scales will mostly involve the right hand. This fingering pattern (1-2-3-1-2-3-4) applies when playing all major scales beginning on a white note. The F major scale is the exception. Use 1-2-3-4-1-2-3 instead.
The following two exercises help you to be familiar with playing arpeggios over multiple octaves. Again, this is useful if you would like to pull off runs and fills quickly and convincingly. C major chord played in groups of 4 notes for 2 octaves C major chord played in groups of 3 notes for 2 octaves Note: These exercises should be done not just on C key/chord. Even a simple C key song does not just contain C major chord. Therefore it should be practiced in other common keys/chords like D, Dm, E, Em, F, G, A, Am, etc. You should also have an understanding that no fingering exercises will solely lead you to becoming a better improviser. During improvisation, your fingers will lead you to new combinations, usually resulting with entirely new fingerings. |
