FREE ONILNE LESSONS (Common Note)

This technique involves using a top common note to harmonize a melody note to produce a voice leading effect. Try the 2 (5) - 3 pattern. Play the 2nd to 3rd note quickly, while the 2nd note is harmonized with the 5th note on top.  In this way, the 5th note acts as a common note.

It is quite subjective when you can or should use in a song. For a start, try replacing any melody note that falls on the 3rd or 5th note with the 2 (5) - 3 pattern. The whole idea of this technique is to find the common note within the melody line to create smoothness. Thus, it usually works better on repetitive melody notes. In other words, use it and experiment with it. You will find the link!
