FREE ONILNE LESSONS ( Block Chords)

Generally, every chord can be substituted with the sus2 chord. (e.g. C chord becomes C2, or Csus2)

A C2 will consists of C E G and D. (D = 2nd scale note)

Since the 2nd scale note will always come after the initial 1-5-8 when playing the broken chord, it is often referred to as the 9th. Hence the 9th and the 2nd are really the same notes.

So where can the 9th be found? It always comes one whole tone after the root. So, the 9th for the C chord is D (because D comes a whole tone after C) and the 9th for the F chord is G (because G comes a whole tone after F) and etc.

Let's look at a C2 chord. With now 4 available notes to play with (C, D, E, G), the possibilities are wider!

Examples:

If you have never tried playing with the 9th in a chord, you should start using it now! As soon as you start using it, you will find your playing different! It's that magical. Remember, use your creativity. Do not restrict yourself to the patterns provided here. Use your ears to decide what sounds good.
